A trucking job is a tough one and comes with many stresses. This isn’t anything new, Trucking has always been that way. That will NEVER change.  Both partners have difficult roles to fulfil. In a positive, workable partnership, both must GIVE more than they take in order that the arrangement works smoothly.

I’m sure it takes a strong, independent and understanding women to be a trucker wife.  Having and maintain a good relationship is vital to both husband and wife.   In a good relationship to be the wife of a trucker is tough to put it mildly I am sure in a shaky relationship, a trucker's wife may easily suffer emotionally from lack of attention, lack of appreciation, or lack of support.

For those of you who are new to this life, keep in mind it's not a "phase" he's going through. It's a real calling! As a wife, you must become self-reliant, learn to take joy in our own accomplishments, pat yourself on the back for "keeping it together", seek the support of friends and family and above all stay busy, busy, busy.

1.     When at home spend time together. 

 Experts say happy couples get 2 hours per day and no less than 15hours per week together. It might be difficult but try and focus on quality time by

a.       Plan dates with each other

b.      Book holidays to have something to look forward to.

 
2.     LEARN HOW TO HANDLE STRESS

Life for both the trucker and the wife can be pretty stressful.  The stay at home partner is stuck with the repetitive tasks ,  kids, pets, chores, bills, other jobs and EVERYTHING – part time plumber, mechanic, bookkeeper, doctor, vet, you name it! 

The truck driver encounters many stresses on the road. So when the couple gets together, it's only natural to want to unload their worries on each other.

So it’s pretty normal for when they get back together – They both want to unload their stresses and worries on each other.  This often leads to big arguments where both want to be heard and understood.   Don't make the mistake of taking out your stresses and frustrations on your partner.

a.       If you're overly stressed, be sure to let your partner know that you are feeling pretty tense at the time and REASSURE them it's NOT their fault.  This will often ease the tension and PREVENT unnecessary arguments.

b.      Don't waste your at home-time arguing with each other. Time together is too precious for those in trucker relationships.

c.       Find ways to combat your stress levels. Reading, exercising, watching television etc. are great ways to unwind.


Keep up communication

It’s a lonely life both trucker and their partner – both can feel unappreciated and not understood. 

a.       Makes sure to tell your partner that you admire and respect them for all the big and little things they do for you. Even talk about things you both do for each other and the family. 

b.      Don’t put your partner’s role down thinking your job is more important (THIS IS VERY DAMAGING).  It takes “two” to make the whole thing work. 

c.       It’s just a fact women talk more than men, let you partner share her feeling and it can also help the men to share theirs (because they like to avoid it).  It healthy to both check in and know where you’re both at.


Put the relationship first

a) Work out your prioirities, Is it the truck or ir parnter… You need to decide.  If you want a good wamona nd the respect, trust and support you need put your partner first. 

b) Keep in mind your partners opinion when you make choices – not just your own.   

c) Very simple and easy - tell your other half often that they are the most important person in your life...... and mean it.


Keep in touch

Make sure to text or call at least once a day.  This is vital. Having contact with your other half daily, reaffirms the relationship. It's an opportunity to chat, even if only briefly about little things, the days events or just to hear their voice.

Guys...it is NOT sissy, or stupid or unmanly to tell your significant other how you feel about them. In fact, it's very sexy, you know!  Just a few words of expression right from the heart, will go a heck of a long way.

Trust is the key to successful trucker relationships

There must already be high level of trust embedded in trucker relationships. If not, the whole thing will be headed for the rocks. It won't improve when your trucker is on the road. In fact, the feelings of mistrust will grow and fester.

a)      For the stay at home spouse, find things to do that you genuinely enjoy doing, and keep busy! 

b)      Always be honest with each other. This is not an option.

c)      Write each other love notes, this helps build the connection.

An important reminder

If you are lucky enough to have a supportive, trusting, understanding woman at home that treats you with respect and knows how tough your job is on the road everyday. If you have THAT woman at home show her you appreciate her and with the same understanding, trust, support and respect. Show her the love she deserves, don't just utter the words. Show her!

Just remember it takes 2 to make any partnership work, these relationships do take consistent effort and attention to keep the love alive.
